Dr. Luvelle Brown is the current superintendent. He took over from Dr. Judith C. Pastel who was Superintendent of Schools since 1996. (Her tenure was one of the longest of any current superintendent of a public school district in New York.) Under Dr. Brown are Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction- Constance Evelyn, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services- Margaret Boice, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources- Robert Van Keuren, and Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Lesli Myers.
Robert Ainslie is the President of the Board of Education; Seth Peacock is the First Vice-President. There are nine members of the Board of Education elected at-large for three-year terms. Current members (with term expiration dates in parentheses) are:
One seat is currently vacant (formerly held by Scott Perez, who resigned from the board for family reasons; seat up for election in 2011; the board has option of appointing a member until this time, holding a special election, or leaving the seat vacant until next year's election.)
Cayuga Heights Elementary School was also closed for several years at the time but was later reopened.
On February 2, 2010, Superintendent Pastel proposed closing Fall Creek Elementary School as one of several options to explore in order to relieve a budget shortfall. Students at Fall Creek would have been absorbed into Beverly J. Martin, Belle Sherman, and South Hill Schools. On March 9, 2010, the ICSD school board passed a motion by a vote of 5-4 to keep all eight elementary schools open and calling for an examination of district building usage, meaning that Fall Creek will remain open for at least one more school year.

Closed Schools
The following elementary schools were closed in a consolidation effort around 1980:- Danby Elementary School (Building now used for some district offices. After the school closed, the building was sold by the district, and then subsequently repurchased a decade later at ten times the original selling price.)

- Glenwood Elementary School (now part of the Franziska Racker Center)
- Henry St. John Elementary School
- West Hill Elementary School (Building now houses the Lehman Alternative Community School.)
