A dispute over the removal of books from the high school library led eventually to the United States Supreme Court, where a fractured court ruled in Island Trees School District v. Pico

In the summer of 2008, the High School was testing for possible lead contamination. According to Newsday, the school spent $141,000 to do the testing, which continued through the end of September.

Daniel Fuentes Memorial Scholarship Fund

Daniel Fuentes Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2007 by Nancy and Armando Fuentes with the help and support of Island Trees High School in Levittown, New York. Island Trees High School officials and supervisors worked with the Fuentes Family in order to help students obtain a college education.

Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to graduating Island Trees High School seniors. Awards will be available to help cover the costs of tuition, room and board, fees and other required educational expenses.

On Saturday, November 14, 2009, the Daniel A. Fuentes Memorial Scholarship fundraiser was held at the Farmingdale Lanes. The Fuentes family organized the event, assisted by a committee including many community members and friends. Danny's son, Daniel Jonathan Fuentes rolled out the first bowling ball to open the fundraiser. Over 300 people attended, including many Island Trees students and staff. A number of dignitaries were also in attendance. Entertainment was provided by a number of talented performers, including Island Trees alumni, Donnie Klang

. Thanks to the dedication and efforts of the Fuentes family, over $12,000.00 was raised for the scholarship fund, which directly benefits Island Trees students. An additional $3000.00 was contributed in Danny's name to the Verizon Pioneer program, which distributes needed supplies to military troops serving overseas, as well as Wounded Warriors, recovering from war related injuries. The generosity of Danny's family and friends is much appreciated by all of Island Trees.
