After 5 years of successful rugby for Ulster, where he came into the public eye through his attacking style of game, Boss signed for Leinster to commence from the start of the 2010–2011 campaign.
He returned to his native New Zealand as part of the Ireland squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, scoring a try in Ireland's one-sided win over Russia. Ireland were eliminated in the quarter finals by Wales, and Boss made just one appearance.
