The trail is used by many dog walkers and cyclists in the area. The route forms a ring as there are no start and end points. The trail passes through Irvine's Low Green, and goes up to Kilwinning

The route forms part of the national cycle network with routes 7 and 73 forming part of the route.

Unsolved murder of Shona Stevens

In an incident that shocked the community of Bourtreehill a young mother was brutally murdered on this path, this murder has to this day been left unsolved. In broad daylight on November the 10th 1994 Shona Stevens had her life taken away from her violently while walking on the footpath in Bourtreehill Park / Middleton Park on the way back to her nearby house on the New Town Trail.
