The Irish Daily Star has become known for its comprehensive in-depth coverage of and thorough focus on crime, often featuring sensational coverage. It also focuses on celebrity matters, and has a large sports section. Between 2003 and 2011, a Sunday edition was published, as Irish Daily Star Sunday.

It was first published on 29 February 1988. Nominally it is the Irish version of the UK tabloid Daily Star. It does however contain more Irish content than any similar Irish editions of the UK national newspapers. The paper has strong nationalist leanings, claiming on its slogan that it is "Better... because we're Irish".

Like its British sister paper, the Irish Daily Star has a red-top mast head.

However, while the Daily Star focuses almost exclusively on celebrity content, the Irish Star includes coverage of Irish issues. In this sense, it has more in common with the Daily Mail

Starplus.ie is a new entertainment website, created by the Irish Daily Star in partnership with Click Media and Muzu.tv. Run by showbiz-loving self-proclaimed journalists, it bring its readers news on music, movies, games and gadgets — with a fresh blast of OK TV! and their red carpet showbiz for good measure. Starplus.ie prides itself on publishing content that cannot for legal reasons be featured in the Irish Daily Star. Hence the name, Starplus.ie.

A tipping and betting news website launched in 2010 by the Irish Daily Star. The site offers daily horse racing tips and football tips as well as covering a range of other sports including gaelic football, hurling, tennis, golf and darts.

Authors such as Donn McCleann, Gary O'Brien and Derek Foley feature on the website.
