Iqyax is the ancient Unangan
name for the sea kayak
of the Aleutian
Islands and Alaska Peninsula.
The iqya-x was built of a light wooden frame, tied together with sinew, and covered with sea lion hides sewn with a waterproof stitch.
For hundreds (possibly thousands) of years, the Unangan
people built and paddled iqyax along the coast of the Aleutian Islands and lower Alaska Peninsula, using this sea craft as a tool for fishing, hunting, traveling, and warfare.
