The Iowa Medical and Classification Center (IMCC) is a medium security correctional facility located in the Johnson County
community Oakdale, Iowa
. It houses about 900 inmates.
The main role of the IMCC is to serve as a reception and classification center for adults being sent to prison. Inmates here are assigned to one of the various prisons in Iowa
. For this purpose, the center has a medium security general population unit. The unit also has a 20 bed unit for high risk females, and an accredited 46 bed psychiatric ward that provides inpatient psychiatric and evaluation services for prisoners. IMCC also provides medical, educational, and social services to other Iowa prisons.
In February 2007 a portion of the perimeter fence
surrounding the center was damaged in an ice storm. After making temporary plans, officials have proposed replacing all the perimeter fences at the facility - the proposal is currently being studied by the Iowa Legislature.
