History

When the highway was created in 1930, it was originally numbered Iowa Highway 169, and it only went between Elk Horn and Kimballton. Later in 1930, U.S. Route 169

 was created and the highway number was changed to 173. In 1980, the highway was extended south from Elk Horn to meet Iowa Highway 83.
