Ionithermie treatment originated in France. It was invented by the French biochemist, Olivier Fouche, in 1979. After 4 years of medical research and clinical trials, ionithermie was launched in the UK in 1983.

A preliminary study, to evaluate the effect of ionithermie on patients with cellulite, was performed in 2006 by Gustavo Leibaschoff (MD), Juliana Melamed (MD) and their team. The study included ten women, and indicated that the treatment may have had some effect on reducing the appearance of cellulite.
