It is an inquiry-based program developed by Uri Haber-Schaim, Reed Cutting, Graden Kirksey, and Harold Pratt as a means of allowing students to achieve hands-on experience in a laboratory setting and to teach students to "think like scientists". IPS was originally developed under a grant from the National Science Foundation and is currently in its 8th edition. The IPS "storyline" is supported by experiments derived from both chemistry and physics.
