. It has over 8000 members in over 60 countries. It publishes a members' newsletter and organizes meetings.

There are five levels of membership for qualified health and safety practitioners.
  • Fellow (FIIRSM) By application after 5 years at Member level.
  • Member (MIIRSM) Requires a recognised diploma or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 6 or above) and relevant experience as a safety practitioner.
  • Associate (AIIRSM) Requires a recognised certificate or equivalent qualification (NQF Level 3) and relevant experience as a safety practitioner.
  • Affiliate For those involved in accident prevention and occupational health and safety but who do not qualify for a designated grade of membership, or are in a related discipline.
  • Student For those working towards the qualifications for Associate or Member.


In addition there is a Specialist stream for ancillary professions giving the post nominal SIIRSM (equivalent to MIIRSM) or SFIIRSM (equivalent to FIIRSM).
