Becoming a member

To become a Certified Dog Trainer (CDT), a person must submit documentation for an exam. There is no practical test of the trainer's ability. Documentation includes:
Exam registration form, three letters of reference, sample training handout and interview forms, three case studies, and three client forms. Becoming an advanced CDT requires being first registered as a CDT for 1 year, have 5 years experience and pass a practical exam. The practical exam can be taken in person or submitted by video.

The requirement for the grades of membership is based on examinations carried out by IACP. IACP sets and controls its own certification

 and provides means by which members can develop their skills through seminars

Members of the IACP abide by a code of conduct

However, none of IACP's examinations or governing processes are externally audited or accredited.
