In the same year, the Department of Computer Science (DCC) was established at the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (IMECC). On March 1996, the Department was separated from IMECC and became a full institute, the 20th academic unit of Unicamp. The reorganization was completed formally when its first dean came to office in the next year (March 1997).

Faculty
One of the institute strongest points is the quality and variety of its faculty. The Institute currently has 44 active professors (of which 34 are doctors with full time appointments), who are graduates of the best universities of the world, and whose activities of research and orientation cover almost all the areas of computer science and engineering.
