Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research

The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER; ), and the related National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) are a group of premier institutes being created by the Government of India, through the Ministry of Human Resource Development (India)
(MHRD), to promote education and research in the sciences. Five IISER's have been currently planned across the country in the following locations -- Kolkata
in West Bengal
, Pune
in Maharashtra
, Mohali
in Punjab
, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh
and Thiruvananthapuram
in Kerala
. The financial outlay for each IISER is around Rs
500 crore
(Rs 5 billion) for the first five years. The NISER is being set up in Bhubaneswar
for a slightly higher outlay of Rs 800 crore
s (Rs 8 billion).
The IISERs at Kolkata

(Trivandrum) have started functioning from the Kolkata Extension Centre of IIT Kharagpur, NCL
Pune campus, MGSIPA complex in Sector 26 Chandigarh, ITI Gas Rahat Building Govindpura Bhopal and College of Engineering, Trivandrum
campus respectively. In future they will function from their own campuses. The Campus of IISER Pune
is under construction on 100 acre (0.404686 km²) of land at Pashan, Pune. The Campus of IISER Kolkata is coming up over 250 acres (1 km²) of land at Haringhata, Kalyani near Kolkata. The first set of admissions through IIT-JEE and KVPY have been done and the teaching program at IISER Mohali
has commenced from August 2007.

. The foundation stone of IISER, Kolkata was laid on July 11, 2006 and that of IISER Mohali
in September, 2006 by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh
. The foundation stone of IISER Pune was laid on April 1, 2010 by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh. NISER Bhubaneswar began functioning shortly after the foundation stone was laid down on August 28, 2006 by the Prime Minister. Unlike its sister institutions, the IISERs, NISER is being administered by the Department of Atomic Energy. A somewhat larger campus of 300 acres (1.2 km²) is planned.
Land for IISER Thiruvananthapuram (about 200 acres) is has been identified at Vithura
, a picturesque town at the foothills of the Western Ghats. Vithura is located within 30 km from the city and is near to the famous tourist spot Ponmudi
. The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), a new institute of the Department of Space, Govt, of India, will be within few kilometers from IISER.
courses have already been admitted to the institutes at Kolkata and Pune, as well as NISER. Almost double number of students were admitted in the second batch. These students were selected through the highly competitive IIT-JEE. Furthermore, some students were selected from the IISc's KVPY
and the Olympiad student list.
Students qualifying any of the following examinations will be eligible for admission-
As of 2009 Admissions, the IISERs will not be accepting students who qualify through the olympiad route. Intake will only be through KVPY and IIT-JEE, for the batch of 2009.
From 2010 onwards IISER's are also taking in students who score well in their board exams.
