Accident

On 19 August 1981, Flight 557 was operated by HAL 748 aircraft VT-DXF. Approaching Bajpe Airport, the aircraft had to hold due to weather conditions. On landing, it landed long and overran the runway, causing the nose gear of the aircraft to collapse. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair and was written off. There were no casualties among the four crew and 22 passengers. One of the passengers on board was Veerappa Moily

An investigation revealed that the pilot had not set the aircraft's flaps to the correct position for landing, and the aircraft had landed long on the runway and at excessive speed. The runway also had a downslope and the aircraft had landed with a tailwind.

The aircraft involved was HAL 748 VT-DXF, manufacturer's serial number 511. The aircraft first flew in 1967.
