She graduated from Florida State University

 and helped put Florida State women's soccer on the map. Trotter, who played at Florida State from 2003–06, was selected by Saint Louis Athletica in the Women's Professional Soccer General Draft on October 6, 2008. She was the first player picked by St. Louis in the draft (Second round, 14th overall pick).

Trotter signed on 17 June 2008 to Pali Blues

, she left one month later in July 2008 the club and signed a two-year contract at 1.FFC Frankfurt. After 10 games and one goal on 13 January 2009, she announced her retirement from professional football.

On March 16, 2010 Trotter was named to Saint Louis' 23 player roster. She made her first appearance for the club on April 25 against the Boston Breakers. On May 6, 2010 Trotter was traded to Sky Blue FC
