Encyclopedia
The iliac fascia is a fascia
Fascia
A fascia is a layer of fibrous tissue that permeates the human body. A fascia is a connective tissue that surrounds muscles, groups of muscles, blood vessels, and nerves, binding those structures together in much the same manner as plastic wrap can be used to hold the contents of sandwiches...

Pelvis
In human anatomy, the pelvis is the lower part of the trunk, between the abdomen and the lower limbs .The pelvis includes several structures:...

 area of the human body
Human body
The human body is the entire structure of a human organism, and consists of a head, neck, torso, two arms and two legs.By the time the human reaches adulthood, the body consists of close to 100 trillion cells, the basic unit of life...

It has the following connections:
  • laterally, to the whole length of the inner lip of the iliac crest

    Linea terminalis
The linea terminalis or innominate line consists of the pectineal line, the arcuate line, and the sacral promontory. It is part of the pelvic brim, which is the edge of the pelvic inlet. The pelvic inlet is typically used to divide the abdominopelvic cavity into an abdominal and a pelvic cavity...

    Lesser pelvis
The lesser pelvis is that part of the space enclosed by the skeleton of the pelvis which is situated between the pelvic inlet and the pelvic floor. Some authors call this cavity the pelvic cavity...

    Periosteum
Periosteum is a membrane that lines the outer surface of all bones, except at the joints of long bones. Endosteum lines the inner surface of all bones....

At the iliopectineal eminence
Iliopectineal eminence
Medial to the anterior inferior iliac spine is a broad, shallow groove, over which the iliacus and psoas major muscles pass. This groove is bounded medially by an eminence, the iliopubic eminence , which marks the point of union of the ilium and pubis. It constitutes a lateral border of the pelvic...

it receives the tendon of insertion of the Psoas minor, when that muscle exists.

Lateral to the femoral vessels it is intimately connected to the posterior margin of the inguinal ligament
Inguinal ligament
The inguinal ligament is a band running from the pubic tubercle to the anterior superior iliac spine. Its anatomy is very important for operating on hernia patients.-Anatomy:...

, and is continuous with the transversalis fascia
Transversalis fascia
The transversalis fascia is a thin aponeurotic membrane which lies between the inner surface of the Transversus abdominis and the extraperitoneal fascia....

.

Immediately lateral to the femoral vessels the iliac fascia is prolonged backward and medialward from the inguinal ligament as a band, the iliopectineal fascia, which is attached to the iliopectineal eminence.

This fascia divides the space between the inguinal ligament and the hip bone into two lacunæ or compartments:
  • the medial vascular lacuna
    Vascular lacuna
The vascular lacuna is the medial compartment beneath the inguinal ligament, for the passage to the femoral vessels, lymph node, and femoral branch of the genitofemoral nerve. Medial to lateral these are the: Rosenmuller lymph node, femoral vein, femoral artery, and gem oral branch of...

  • the lateral muscular lacuna
    Muscular lacuna
The Muscular lacuna is the lateral compartment beneath the inguinal ligament, for the passage of the iliopsoas muscle and femoral nerve; it is separated by the iliopectineal arch from the vascular lacuna....
