He served as Minister for Mines and Steel from 1979 to 1983.

After taking his seat in the Senate in June 1999 he was appointed to committees on Rules & Procedures, Aviation (Chairman), Banking & Currency, Foreign Affairs, Agriculture and Privatization.
He was reelected in 2003, but in 2007 lost the PDP primary election to his brother, Dahiru Awaisu Kuta, who went on to be elected.
Kuta died on 1 March 2008 in his residence in Abuja
