Ian Reid was in the youth set up at Nottingham Forest. However he was unable to secure a contract within the senior ranks at the club. He next joined Dundee United for whom he scored three goals in his twelve league games.

 described Reid as, 'The player who made things tick'. Reid's Queens career came to an end in January 1977 when he was transferred for a fee of £4,000. In the club's goal scoring chart his 89 goals place him 8th equal along with Jimmy Robertson.
