History

The community was initially called "Edwardsville" after William Edwards, who founded the village by building a tannery there. The village was incorporated in 1896.

Hunter is located at 42°12′30"N 74°12′50"W (42.208549, -74.21398).

Hunter Village contains the Ski Resort Hunter Mountain which is open for skiing and tubing in the winter and biking, sightseeing and hiking in the summer.

It is in Greene County in the 20th Congressional district of New York.

The largest employer in the village is Hunter Mountain, a ski resort run by the Slutzky family in the heart of Hunter. The seasonal nature of the mountain regulates the economic activity of the town.
