History

Hungry Howie's was founded in 1973 by James R. Hearn. The first Hungry Howie's was located on Telegraph Road in Taylor, Michigan. Ruby was the waitress for the small dining room. The place was a popular hangout for Taylor Jr. High School and Taylor Center High School students. Steven E. Jackson delivered pizzas for Hearn at this time and the two formed a partnership. Jackson and Hearn decided to franchise their operation in 1982, and they awarded their first franchise in 1983. In the eight years between 1974 and 1982, there had also been several other independently owned Hungry Howie pizzarias opened in the Metro-Detroit/Ann Arbor, Michigan area prior to official franchisee sales which began in 1982. 65 franchises were opened in the next three years and 160 franchises were present by the end of the 1980s.
The origin of the name Howie is unknown. It is speculated that the owner's dog was named Howie, or that Hungry Howie's simply had a ring to it.
Hungry Howie's also offers a lower carb thin crust pizza.

Flavored Crust

Hungry Howie's is known for their free flavored crust. The options are Butter, Butter Cheese, Cajun, Garlic Herb, Onion, Ranch, Sesame, and Banzai. Multiple crust flavors can be combined. Banzai is all flavors combined.
