He was the only son of Lambert of Chalon

Around 968, he married to Adelaide of Chalon, the daughter of Gilbert, Duke of Burgundy and widow of Robert of Vermandois...

 and was made canon of the Cathedral of Autun. After his father death, he was proclaimed bishop of Auxerre in 999 by request of Henry I, Duke of Burgundy. After the death of the latter, he abandoned Auxerre to defend his family county of Chalon
