Huang's was born in Ninghua (寧化) Fujian

 province, to a poor family. His style names were 'Gong shou' (恭壽) and 'Gong Mao" (恭懋). His pseudonym was 'Ying Piaozi' (癭瓢子).

He began his training under the painter Shang Guanzhou (上官周). In the earliest part of his career he excelled at cursive calligraphy
