He was born in Egypt, and was a son of Valens and a brother of Phanes. He was originally a student of rhetoric

. He was also commended in that year, together with his brother, to Maximus praefectus Aegypti, and Eutocius. He later turned to Cynic philosophy. He appears as an interlocutor in Macrobius's Saturnalia, (dramatic date 384) and was a friend of Symmachus
