Constituency profile

The easternmost seat in Greater London, Hornchurch and Upminster is essentially an expansion of the old Upminster seat to include a chunk of the old Hornchurch seat - specifically Hornchurch itself. The predecessor seats were lost by the Conservatives in the landslide election of 1997, but were won back in 2001 and 2005 respectively and this area is now very safe territory for the Tories because it gained their strongest areas from Hornchurch in the boundary changes.

The constituency includes affluent areas such as Hornchurch town centre, Cranham and Upminster. There are some pockets of deprivation in the north of the constituency. There are high levels of retired constituents by London standards. The seat is the only one in London that extends beyond the M25 motorway.
