Austerberry was born in Hanley, Staffordshire

Austerberry spent 11 years in charge at Stoke, with the first 10 being in the First Division. He was also the first manager to lead the club in to the semi finals of a national cup competition by reaching the Semi-finals of the FA Cup in 1899. In 1907 Stoke were relegated and Austerberry left the club a year later.
