, beat Oklahoma
at Madison Square Garden
to win the NCAA championship. The team entered the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
as the last seed in the 8-team tournament. In the first match, Holy Cross defeated the United States Naval Academy
in front of a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden
by a score of 55 to 47. Mullaney led the team in scoring with 18 points, mostly in part to Navy coach Ben Carnevale
's decision to have his players back off from Mullaney, who was reputed as being more of a playmaker than a shooter. In the semi-final match, Holy Cross faced the City College of New York
(CCNY), coached by Nat Holman
, one of the game's earliest innovators. The Crusaders, led by Kaftan's 30-point game, easily defeated the Beavers 60–45. In the championship game, Holy Cross faced the University of Oklahoma
, behind coach Bruce Drake
, in another sold-out game at Madison Square Garden. Kaftan followed up the semi-final match with 18 points in the title game, leading the Crusaders to a 58–47 victory against the Sooners. Holy Cross became the first college from the New England
area to win a national college basketball title. The Crusaders finished the 1947 season with 23 straight wins. Afterward, 35,000 people watched a parade in the team's honor on Holy Cross Day in Worcester
. Future NBA legend Cousy was named AP and UP player of the year, and George Kaftan was voted to the all-decade team of the 1940s by the NCAA in 1989. The Crusaders finished third in the tournament the following year, and were ranked No. 1 in the 1949-1950 campaign as they won 26 straight games to start the season. In 1954 Holy Cross, behind another future NBA Hall-of-famer
and Celtics
legend Tom Heinsohn, won the NIT Tournament. The Crusaders were consistently ranked in the AP top 20 through the 1950s and 1960s. As late as 1977, Holy Cross was still considered a national power. That year, Holy Cross knocked off a good Providence team twice on last-second shots by forward Chris Potter, and led top-ranked Michigan at the half in the first round of the NCAA tournament before being defeated. The following year, Sports Illustrated
ranked Holy Cross and freshman of the year Ronnie Perry ninth in its pre-season poll, but the Crusaders never did achieve those lofty ranks.
in 1980, but college President Rev. John E. Brooks
, S.J., vetoed the move for academic reasons. Holy Cross stayed independent until joining the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
(MAAC) to start the 1983-84 season. It moved to the Patriot League
in 1991. The basketball program suffered greatly with the move to the small school conference, but the college thought it was best to insure academics over athletics.
In recent decades, the men's basketball team has been the leading varsity program of the Holy Cross' athletic department. The men's basketball team has won five Patriot League
titles (1993, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007) since the league's formation in 1991.
. As a 15 seed in 2001 they lost 72–68 to 2nd seeded Kentucky, who went to lose in the Sweet Sixteen. In 2002, 16th seeded Holy Cross nearly pulled off the greatest upset in tournament history when they lost 70–59 to top seeded Kansas who went on to lose in the Final Four. In that game Holy Cross led 37–35 at halftime, held their largest lead at 44–39 with about 11 minutes remaining, and it remained just a three-point game with less than two minutes remaining. Lastly, in 2003, 14th seeded Holy Cross lost to 3rd seeded Marquette, led by Dwyane Wade
, 72–68. Marquette went on to the Final Four.
