Ho Yan Hor Herbal Tea founded by Dr. Ho Kai Cheong, the founder of Hovid Berhad
, is a Chinese herbal tea recipe that contains of 24 herbs, 12 of them are known either to have antipyretic or have been used to treat fever. The ingredient include Bupleurum Falcatum, Lithospermum Ofeicinale, Scutellaria Baicalensis, Siler Divericatum, Ilex Rotunda, Glycyrrhiza, Artemesia Apiacea, Cleistocalyx Operculatux, Elscholtzia Patini, Citrus Trifoliata, Menthae Arvensis and Pogostemom Heyneamus.
Besides being an antipyretic they also have other functions, like relieving abdominal discomfort, vomiting, diarrhoea and anorexia.
Objective of the Study
1. To conduct a literature research on each herb used in the preparation of this herbal tea and also to identify the hern or herbs responsible for the antipyretic effect.
2. To determine the dose required to reduce fever.
3. To evaluate the antipyretic property of Ho Yan Hor Herbal Tea by using animal model.
4. To compare the antipyretic efficacy of this tea with standard drugs, aspirin and paracetamol when used for acute and prophylactic treatments.
5. To learn how to prove experimental results statistically.
Results
The efficacy of the Ho Yan Hor Herbal Tea as an antipyretic decoction, Asoirin 500, Aspirin 600 and Paracetamol 500 were studied on mice. Results showed that the Ho Yan Hor Herbal Tea successfully reduced fever in the mice and its efficacy was comparable with Aspirin 500, Aspirin 600 and Paracetamol 500.
Conclusion
The Ho Yan Hor Herbal Tea had long been used as a decoction for fever. The literature research revealed that 12 of the herbs in the decoction contain antipyretic properties. This is further supported by the experiments done which showed the herbal tea to be both an acute and prophylactic treatment for fever.
