Hjelme is a former municipality in Hordaland

The parish of Hjelme was designated to be a municipality by a split from Manger
on January 1, 1910. The municipality, which was known as Hjelmen at that time, had a population of 986. On 5 November 1912 the name was changed from Hjelmen to Hjelme by royal resolution. On 1 January 1964, Hjelme, then with 956 inhabitants, was merged with the majority of Herdla
to form the new municipality Øygarden
.
Hjelme old church ( Hjelme gamle kirke) dates from 1875. Previously the inhabitants of the parish of Hjelme had to row across the Hjelte Fjord to either Hordabø
or Manger
. It is built of wood and has 180 seats. The church is no longer in active use. Hjelme Church (Hjelme kirke) is a working church builtin 1971. It was built of concrete and has 340 seats.
