The Highland Community School District is a school district
in Highland Township, Washington County, Iowa that serves Riverside
and Ainsworth
and surrounding rural areas. The district covers most of Washington County and a small portion of Johnson County. The high school and middle school are connected in one building located between Riverside and Ainsworth. There are elementary schools in both Riverside and Ainsworth.

A smaller renovation project also took place at Ainsworth Elementary School, where some stage space was renovated into classroom space. The work began in the summer and ended in the fall of 2009.
During the summer of 2011 the original high school science lab was remodeled to include new technologies. The cafeteria in the high school was painted and a new floor was put in. New tile was put in one middle school classroom and the Ainsworth Elementary building was painted.

Highland Middle School
Highland Middle School is the single middle school in the district. Built in 2002, with one addition since then, it is connected to Highland High School. It is located in the country between Riverside and Ainsworth at 1715 Vine Avenue. The school serves grades 6 through 8.Highland High School
Highland High School, the sole high school in the district, serves grades 9 through 12. The building was built in 1965, with renovations and additions since then. A connection to the middle school allows the sharing of some courses between schools. It is currently a 1A school, as is the middle school. Building renovations
The bulk of the construction improvements took place at the middle school and high school building from June 2009 to August 2010. The main renovations included new bathrooms, locker rooms, and four new classrooms for the middle school; a new office, wrestling room, weight room, and five new classrooms for the high school; and a new library serving both schools.A smaller renovation project also took place at Ainsworth Elementary School, where some stage space was renovated into classroom space.
