The place was known as High Bridge from the time it was started about 1833 until 1880, when its name was changed to Elk Horn. The change was in anticipation of the post office, which didn’t come until around 1895 and then remained only two years. When the post office was abolished the village’s name reverted to High Bridge. High Bridge is a fitting name, for the arch bridge built in 1856 is one of the beauty spots of Onondaga. On many a summer’s day one may see artists sitting on the banks of the creek transferring its grace to canvas.

High Bridge sprang up as a result of the lime mines nearby. The mines furnished grist for the early mills of High Bridge, Manlius, and Fayetteville and when they gave out High Bridge faded and Manlius and Fayetteville rose to fill the void.

Years ago mill wheels hummed in High Bridge and it had many residents, a hotel, two churches, and several stores. Today all that is left is a meat block factory owned by McArthur, Wirth & Cooney of Syracuse, a popular swimming pool owned by Charles Snook, and one of the churches, now abandoned.
There is the stone school, too, known as Washington school, built in 1849. The district, number nine, was allotted in 1837 when the town of Manlius took first steps toward education.

The school was built the same year that Joshua V. H. Clark published his “Annals of the Onondaga Valley;” the author’s most enduring monument albeit it cost him quite a sum.

The abandoned mill still standing next to Charles Snook’s home was built by Asel Wilcox for grinding flour. Asel’s father was Samuel Wilcox, a revolutionary soldier, who fought at Bunker Hill

, and who settled near Lyndon in 1798. He died in 1827.

Asel Wilcox operated the mill for grinding for quite a few years and then changed it to a plaster mill. He lived on the site of Charles Snook’s home and owned lime mines and shipped his product on the Erie canal. He died in 1865 a wealthy man.

Cortland Snook was postmaster while the post office was in Elk Horn or High Bridge and also operated the hotel on the corner in the center of the village. The hotel burned about 1913.

The church that is still standing tho deserted was built about 1843 served practically all of the Protestant denominations at one time or another. Before it was abandoned 1925, it was known as the Union church.

While the church was in its hey day there was a split in the congregation and another was built a short distance down the hill. That church didn’t last long and has disappeared entirely.

High Bridge lost a lot of residents around 1856 when many went west and settled in Wisconsin, Illinois, and other western states. It remained fairly active, however, into the start of the 20th century.

The modern advancement caught up with High Bridge and it began to decline. There are ruins in the village now of once fine homes and buildings. They are gone forever and for that matter, so is High Bridge.
