Plot

There is an elderly author "Shozo" in a historical port town for the Japanese historical trading ships "Kitamaebune

Shozo is writing his novels and living with his red goldfish.

One day a female staff "Tochiko" comes from a publishing firm in Tokyo as a relief of her colleague, but Shozo sent her away.
After Tochiko left the island, Shozo saw a drawing of a dragon on the beach which Tochiko drew for a boy.
Then Shozo accepts her to come to his place, and when she comes again to get his manuscript, Shozo asks about herself, Tochiko tells she was performing shadow play

 when she was a college student. So, Shozo requests her to perform it for kids in the island. Then Tochiko visits Shozo frequently to perform shadow play and receive his manuscript.

Sometimes after, Shozo asks about his story of his present manuscript, Tochiko gives her thoughts honestly, then Shozo finish his current story.
When Tochiko receives his final manuscript, she asks about the design of the book cover. At this time Tochiko has shadow pictures for her play, which made by herself from her father's an ink rubbing of a sea bream, so Shozo asks Tochiko to make an ink rubbing of his red goldfish

But Tochiko feel sorry for the red goldfish, because to make an ink rubbing of it, the red goldfish might be dead.
And that becomes a quiet issue for Tochiko, and Shozo will repent what he has done with her.

Two months later, Shozo will meet Tochiko again, but in a hospital.
Tochiko is facing her life with an incurable disease, and Shozo hopes her recovery and keep her going to live.
