. He is the fourth Eurostat Director-General in a row without previous experience as a statistician. This is quite in contrast with the chief statisticians of the ECB, OECD, IMF and most national statistical offices, which are usually professional statisticians. However, his background in econometrics and extensive experience in monetary and financial policies of the European Union gave him a good basis for guiding Eurostat's affairs. In addition, it is a policy of the European Commission to rotate its managerial staff regularly among different duties and services in order to provide them with a broader picture of EU policies, foster close cooperation between different services and focus their work on the support of strategic policy and management decisions.
