It was established in 2000 by an amalgamation of five former local schools. It enrolls boys and girls from the age of 11 to 16 (soon to be 18 in 2009). It also offers a sixth form for students aged 16-18 (18-20 in 2009) who wish to continue their studies into AS and A levels. The school has specialist status as an Arts College.

inspection found the school to be "Very Good" with several excellent features".

The school is part of an Extended Schools consortium known as the Borehamwood/Shenley/Elstree Extended School Consortium. The consortium is made up of two secondary and fourteen primary schools.

The lower school in Shenley Road was previously known as Nicholas Hawksmoor School. Prior to that, up until 1970 it was Borehamwood Grammar school.

The upper school in Thrift Farm Lane was formerly Holmshill Secondary Modern, built around 1970.
