Gerland's career as manager began in 1986 as the assistant manager at VfL Bochum. In 1988, he made a switch within the Bundesliga and became coach of 1. FC Nuremberg, where he stayed until 1990. Beginning with the 1990–91 season, he concurrently coached Bayern Munich Amateure
