The album sees a much more mature contribution by Anderson
on the lyrical side, as he strayed away from his often attacked use of redundant vocabulary. Butler's production is notable for its use of the "wall of sound
", thus creating a lush backdrop for Anderson's vocals.
The album received praise prior to its release from the NME
who called it, "The best album you'll hear this year, by a mile".
Some reviewers felt that the album sounded like later Suede material. Stephen Thomas Erlewine
noted that, Here Come the Tears is what Coming Up would have been if Butler had stuck around. Other reviews, however were more sympathetic, such as Uncut
, who wrote that "It's not a disaster, by any means.... It's just that, over 13 songs, it's abundantly clear that whatever the potency of this partnership, there's an old lack of range."
