Start was born in Bakersfield
in Franklin County, Vermont
, in 1845, the son of Simeon Gould and Mary Sophia (Barnes) Start. He attended Bakersfield and Barre Academies and served in the Union Army
during the Civil War
in the Company A, 3rd Vermont Volunteers
, enlisting below the age of 20. Discharged in July 1865, he returned to Franklin County and read law
under M. R. Taylor. He was admitted to the bar
at St. Albans
at the April term of the county court in 1867.
Start commenced practice
in Bakersfield and formed a partnership
, Cross & Start, with A. P. Cross of St. Albans. Start served as state's attorney
for Franklin County from 1876 to 1978.
Start served in the Vermont Senate
in 1880 and served on the Judiciary committee and as chairman of the joint standing committee on the reform school. Start served as a trustee of the Vermont Reform School from December 1880 to December 1888. Start served as a presidential elector in 1888. In 1890 Start briefly served in the Vermont House of Representatives
; he was elected Speaker
on October 1, 1890, but resigned his House seat November 26, 1890, after being elected without opposition a judge of the Vermont Supreme Court
.
Start died at his home in Bakersfield in 1905 at age 60 and was succeeded on the Vermont Supreme Court by Willard Wedbery Miles.
He was a Congregationalist
