History

Hazelwood East High School was established in 1974 with the class of 1975 involved in split sessions with Hazelwood Central. The Hazelwood School District

had set the boundaries for East Hazelwood, but the students attended Central during construction, with the building opening to students the following year.
The school integrated an 'open-space' classroom concept. Because of this, many of the classrooms did not have four walls separating them from other classes. In the fall of 2003, the school's building underwent many renovations including 20 additional classrooms, additional windows and lockers, a science and math wing, and fully enclosed classrooms.
Although the open classroom concept is now gone, students and staff interact as if these walls never existed. The Spartan population as a whole is extremely cooperative and booming with pride. They work together and support each other everyday as they pursue their educational goals. Alumni have witnessed the school evolve into a wonderful learning institution with an encouraging overall atmosphere.

Curriculum and Student Life

Spartan Code:

Vision Statement
Students and Staff at Hazelwood East High School are committed to creating a school culture that promotes: Academic Success, a Positive Environment, Respect, Cooperation, and Responsibility

At East the curriculum includes a broad selection of courses that help students build on their academic interests, no matter what they are. More than twenty honors courses, some of which may be taken for AP credit, are currently offered, as well as classes that allow students to receive Tech-Prep credit. Students can also take independent study in several areas which lets them acquire a deeper knowledge of that subject. However, the biggest academic points are the solid core requirements that better prepare our students for their next step.

In addition to excelling in the classroom, East Spartans also thrive on the athletic field and in other programs. East is a powerhouse for sports, but students also achieve grand accomplishments through our theater programs and community service. Along with numerous other clubs and events, the Spartan kingdom is full of extracurricular activities.

Hazelwood East has been in the process of transforming our school for the last several years. This will be an ongoing process where the staff of Hazelwood East will look at how our students are performing with multiple measures and determine what processes need to be put into place in order to improve our school system. We have organized our building into several task forces to address specific needs identified by our school reform task force. We currently have 8 committees working to make changes to the system of education here at Hazelwood East.
