The film was first announced in September 2009 originally under the title of Knockout, which was later changed to Haywire, before production began.

The film's screenplay was written specifically to be shot in Dublin. The film was shot mostly in Ireland

, filming began from 2 February 2010 to 25 March 2010 on a budget of around $25 million dollars. Production of the film created over one-hundred jobs in the area where it was filmed.
