. The first true high school that opened in 1893 was called Union High School #3. It served students from Hayward, Castro Valley, San Lorenzo, Redwood, Palomares, and Stonybrook. Initially, it was a one story building with a basement. As late as the 1960s, students still rode their horses to school and tied them to hitching posts. As the number of students exceeded the campus' limit, the site was expanded from 10 to 30 acres (121,405.8 m²). The architecture for the new buildings included ionic columns, low-pitched roofs, and friezes of goods. Hayward High moved to its current campus in 1962, to make way for the new city hall office tower. The school gymnasium became the now demolished Centennial Convention Center

. Students then rally inside the school gym where each class is judged by past alumni on categories such as class spirit and creativity. The winning class is then announced at the homecoming game and are awarded a trophy and bragging rights. Traditionally, seniors take home first place and are followed by juniors, sophomores, and freshmen respectively in rank. In 2010, the junior class of 2012 was the first non-senior class in over 10 years to win Down Town Rally. In 2011 they won again, thus being one of only few classes to win Down Town Rally consecutively in Hayward High's history. Stories have spread throughout the Hayward High student body about a curse placed on odd year classes. The curse states that all classes that end in an odd number are cursed during Down Town Rally and perform considerably poorly compared to other classes. Odd year classes tend to lose to even year classes until their Senior where the curse seems to be lifted. In 2011 the curse became more evident as the freshmen class of 2015 became the first class in 50 years to not have a float.
