The school was opened in 1956 and closed in 2008. It has been extended several times . Hartshead was a Community School, situated opposite the outskirts of Ashton-under Lyne and derives its name from nearby Hartshead PikeHartshead Pike

Merger to form New Charter Academy
In September 2008 Hartshead merged with Stamford High School to form New Charter Academy, named after the academy's sponsor of the same name. The former Stamford High School is now New Charter's Silver Springs Campus and Hartshead's building is now Greenhurst Campus.The Academy opened in September 2008.
