Walter John de la Mare , OM CH was an English poet, short story writer and novelist, probably best remembered for his works for children and the poem "The Listeners"....

. His most acclaimed work, Lavender Blue (1954), a collection of nursery rhymes gathered together by Kathleen Lines, received an American Library Association Award. Critic Brian Alderson has called Jones "perhaps the most original childrens book illustrator of the period".
