On her site http://www.lisarands.com/gaia.asp, she said "I saw the film Hard Grit, which immortalized this route, while in California, long before I ever imagined I'd one day get to climb on that amazing rock, let alone that route...The film opened with mind-blowing footage of the route Gaia. The fall taken by Jean-Minh Trinh-Thieu, swinging and crashing into the arete below, breaking his leg, became forever etched into my memory."

In Rock and Ice, Issue 152, Rands revealed just how much the footage had affected her; after slightly misplacing her feet, she reached out for a sloping hold: "Just when I touched the sloper, where Jean-Minh fell, that image flashed through my mind. I thought, 'Ooh, better try harder.'"
