From 1981 to 1984 she worked at the Mykolaiv Raion newspaper "Leninska Zorya" (Lenin's Dawn). After that Herman found a job at the Lviv
newspaper "Leninska Molod" (Lenin's Youth) where she worked until 1990. During that period she was a member of the Union of journalists of USSR, chief of department for a newspaper "Moloda Halychyna" (Young Halychyna) (1987–1989), Ukrainian independent informational-publishing union of Vyacheslav Chornovil
(1989).
From 1991 to 2002 Herman worked at the Lviv city newspaper "Ratusha" (Rathaus
), while being an independent correspondent of "Radio Liberty". From 2003 to 2004 she became director of Kiev bureau of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Since May 6, 2004 Herman became the spokeswoman for Viktor Yanukovych
who at that time held position of the Prime Minister of Ukraine
. She was appointed a chief of press secretariat for the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine
and later for the leader of Party of Regions
(since January 2005).
In March 2006 Herman joined the Party of Regions
and from May 2006 to March 2010 served as a People's Deputy of Ukraine
. During that period she was a member of two parliamentary committees: in freedom of speech and information (2006–2010) and in foreign affairs (2007–2010). Herman also was a press-secretary for a prime-minister (August 2006 - December 2007). Since August 2008 she became a deputy head of Party of Regions
. On February 25, 2010 a deputy head of Presidential Administration.
In 2010 the Ukrainian magazine Focus named Herman as the second most influential woman in Ukraine after Yulia Tymoshenko
. Herman being ranked among the top 10 most influential women since the introduction of the rating in 2006 finally replaced at that position another Ukrainian female politician Vira Ulianchenko
.
In 2010 Mykola Korovitsyn was appointed a deputy minister at the Ministry of Emergencies
