Habersham Central High School's (HCHS) first classes began in the late summer of 1970, graduating the first class in June 1971. HCHS was formed by the consolidation of the previous two high schools — North Habersham High School and South Habersham High School. Upon forming the new school in 1970, the students voted on school colors and mascot - the colors selected were silver and blue with the mascot being a Raider. Several years after opening the school added orange, and silver was dropped. When it opened HCHS did not have a football field or auditorium, both were completed later.
In 2009 ground was broken for a new high school building across Camp Creek Road from the present facility. Upon completion, the new facility will house grades 10 - 12 and the older facility will be renovated and house the 9th grade.
North Habersham High School (NHHS) was in Clarkesville, Georgia, and served the northern part of the county until 1970 when it combined with South Habersham High School to form Habersham Central High School. NHHS's mascot was the Bobcat and the colors were black and gold.
South Habersham High School (SHHS) was located in Cornelia, Georgia and served the southern part of the county until 1970 when it combined with North Habersham High School to form Habersham Central High School. SHHS's mascot was the Rebels and the colors were red and gray.
The Habersham County School System is currently working on a new plan for the school system for the 2011-2012 school year. So far the changes include: The current high school will be the 9th Grade Academy. The current 9th Grade Academy will be a new middle school. All high school students will attend the new high school located across the road from the current one.
