HT-7
Encyclopedia
HT-7, or Hefei Tokamak-7, is an experimental superconducting tokamak
Tokamak
A tokamak is a device using a magnetic field to confine a plasma in the shape of a torus . Achieving a stable plasma equilibrium requires magnetic field lines that move around the torus in a helical shape...

, to investigate the process of developing fusion power
Fusion power
Fusion power is the power generated by nuclear fusion processes. In fusion reactions two light atomic nuclei fuse together to form a heavier nucleus . In doing so they release a comparatively large amount of energy arising from the binding energy due to the strong nuclear force which is manifested...

. The HT-7 was developed with the assistance of Russia, and was based on the earlier T-7 tokamak reactor. The reactor was built by the Hefei-based Institute of Plasma Physics under the direction of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

.

The HT-7 was finished in May 1994, with final tests accomplished by December of the same year allowing experiments to proceed.

The HT-7 will be superseded by the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak being built in Hefei by the Institute of Plasma Physics as an experimental reactor before ITER
