The ship, originally named Harman and designated a Patrol Gunboat (PG-187), was built under Maritime Commission contract by Walsh-Kaiser Co., Inc.
, Providence, R.I. Intended for use by the United Kingdom, she was reclassified as a Patrol Frigate (PF-79) on 15 April 1943, renamed Dominica, and launched
on 14 September 1943, sponsored by Mrs. Andrew D. Manchester. Dominica was then completed and transferred to the United Kingdom under Lend-Lease
on 25 January 1944 as part of the 21-ship "Colony" class
. She served as a patrol vessel and escort until being returned to the United States on 23 April 1946. The frigate was subsequently sold to Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Chester, Pennsylvania
, on 27 March 1947 and scrapped.
