. His literary career started in 1958 and he became known as a novelist when he wrote the novel Marhi Da Deeva in 1964. His other novels include Anhoe (1966), Addh Chanini Raat (1972), Anhe Ghore Da Daan (1976) and Parsa (1991). He has also published eight collections of short stories which include Saggi Phul (1962), Kutta Te Aadmi (1971), Begana Pindh (1985) and Kareer Di Dhingri (1991). His novels Marhi Da Deeva and Addh Chanini Raat have been translated into English as The Last Flicker (Sahitya Akademi) and Night Of The HalfMoon (Macmillan) respectively. National Book Trust

Apart from novels and short stories he has also authored some three plays, two prose works and nine books for children.He was conferred with Jnanpeeth award in the year 1999. He has also received Punjab Sahitya Akademi Award (1979), the Soviet Land Nehru Award (1986) and the Bhai Veer Singh Fiction Award (1992). sardar Gurdial Singh has taught in the college as a professor for long time. He basically belongs to jaito a place near kotkapura in faridkot district.His exhaustive interview taken by Editor Anil K.Sharma appeared in the literary journal "Contemporary Vibes, Vol 4, Issue No.15, April-June 2009 published from Chandigarh, India,in which he has answered all questions relating from his childhood days to the last wish. The interview is an asset to the research scholars of literature.
