Founded in 1996, Guangzhou Songri was promoted to Jia A in the same year as the runner up of the second division. The team was relegated in the next season, but was able to fight back with the help of coach Xu Genbao
and striker Gao Hongbo
. After ranked 4th in the following year, the team was relegated again in 1999, and relegated from the second division in 2000 due to financial reasons. The club was dismantled in the offseason.
