The most common type of grip tape is a solid black color with a texture that resembles sandpaper . When a skateboarder performs or execute tricks, the grip tape allows the boarder's feet to stay in position - this is really important during aerial maneuvers

Grip tape comes as smooth sheets. The grade and size of grit varies by company and manufacture method.

Many grip tape companies exist including: Heskins, Jessup, Iron Horse, Mechanical, Mob, Shorty's (Black Magic), FKD, Flik, Grizzly Grip, Grippin', and True Grit.
